An interesting movie only because I am watching all five of the original movies. ESCAPE FROM THE PLANET OF THE APES explains how the apes took over the Earth and what happened in the second movie. Not much really happens till towards the end, but of course it is essential for the watching the following two movies.
Interesting note that dates the movie, a doctor actually says that champagne is good to relax a pregnant woman, but then does not want to smoke around her.
