TELEVISION MOVIES AND MINI SERIES

July 16th THE WALKING DEAD season 1 (DVD)

Okay so since I work nights, I am usually up late on my days off as well. Being a natural night owl helps with this so when I found myself up on a Friday night with nothing to do I watched the entire first season of THE WALKING DEAD, that was on HBO earlier this year. Yes there is supposed to be a second season coming.
This series is good not because of the story, which has been done numerous times. The hospital opening reminded me of RESIDENT EVIL, but it is good more because of its humanness. The situations and the way people respond to them all seem real and that they could actually happen. Well except maybe for the place being over run by zombies but you understand what I mean.

July 11th  Television day.

1000 PLACES TO SEE BEFORE YOU DIE : HAWAII (DVD)
A very brief and overall look at the wonders of the Hawaiian Islands in a T.V series that brings to life the pages of the book 1000 Places to see before you die. All I got to say is why are the hosts of these travel shows always kinda on the dumb side and usually not very respectful of the cultures they are visiting.

HUBBLE IMAX (DVD)
Some great images, but not enough of them considering how many images this telescope has produced. Actually the show was more about the astronauts and their repair missions. Shows like this were made to be seen in a special format, such as IMAX, however I think the lack of enough content would have made the show a slight disappointment, if seen there.

KEVIN HART: SERIOUSLY FUNNY (DVD)
There are times when I disagree with tittles totally. I did not find Kevin Hart's stand up to be funny. There were a few jokes near the end that I liked but most were just flat and one or two were even insulting and boring on prejudice. Of course comedy, like so many things is a personal taste, so others may find him funny, seriously.

July 6th PLANET OF THE APES Television Show.1974

Basically the same plot as the movies but gives you a better and more wide ranging view of the Earth at that time. Dated for sure but still a lot of fun.

May 2nd CHILDREN OF DUNE (Miniseries)

The Dune novels, especially the first three, written by Frank Herbert are in my opinion one of the best science fiction book series ever written. Their depth and scope is beyond a normal persons imagination.
The original DUNE movie with Sting, was interesting but had its flaws. Then they did this mini-miniseries of DUNE on television and then they make this CHILDREN OF DUNE three part mini-miniseries  I am sure I watched it when it was on television but when you watch something over again after so many years, it is sometimes like watching it brand new all over again. The series is interesting and entertaining but only because I  have read the books, twice. Watching without reading the books you don't get the full scope of the worlds and the people, so also not the full enjoyment of this incredible universe and the unimaginable (by anyone other then Frank Herbert) people and events that take place

April 20th GAME OF THRONES.

On Sunday April 17th, the first season of GAME OF THRONES began. Seems like this is going to be a cross between a regular Television show from HBO and a mini series.
It actually looks better then it did in the trailer, but with all mini series or movies based on books, there are so many details they just don't have time to put in. Its these details that give the real pleasure to a story as involved as this one. Other people are comparing it to Lord Of the Rings, but honestly it is not that good. It is really good and really enjoyable but even the books go too fast over certain areas that there could have been even more details on.
One thing that bothers me about a show based on a beloved set of books is that the characters who formed in your head while reading never totally match those that are cast to play them on the screen.
A story about kings, knights, demons and dragons how could you really go wrong.
Will definitely keep watching the world of the seven kingdoms unravel on HBO and will look forward to George R.R. Martin's next book when it finally comes out, in mid July, 2011, but will always say that the most enjoyment comes from having both read the books and seen the show but not too close together of course.
