The first half of this documentary about the portrayal of Native Americans in Hollywood films seems to remote more stereotypes in real life Native American societies instead of dispelling the ones that are seen in the movies. There is barely anything about Native Americans in films, except a few very short clips.
They briefly touch upon the idea that the United States used Native Americans in films as a scapegoat to take the minds of Americans off the great depression during the 1930s. This is a subject that should have been expanded and discussed through all eras of film in this movie.
The later half of the movie was more about how the United States looked at Native Americans and identified with Native culture, even to the point of stealing that identity and mythicizing that identity in places like summer camps. However, it was the identity seen in westerns and other movies not the real identity and culture of real Native Americans.
Very little at all throughout the whole film about the effect the Hollywood movies had on Native Americans, except the ending which talks about Native Cinema today.
