Nov 17 SMOKE SIGNALS (DVD)

Another movie I learned about when watching the documentary REEL INJUN.  This one from 1998 and the story about two young Native men who are searching for things not easily found. What they find during this at first apparently hopeful movie is the strength to go beyond their past and find their own paths.
The movie is based on the collection of short stories called THE LONE RANGER AND TONTO FIST FIGHT IN HEAVEN.
This is the type of movie that breaks stereotypes of Natives in movies and shows them as Human Beings just like the rest of us. It is unfortunate that it took so long for a movie like this to be made. However, the tackle prejudice and feelings about Natives head on, especially with one line “Cowboys always win” where the other character says “NO, cowboys do not always win…Ever notice in all the movies you never see John Wayne’s teeth?”
The best but also the subtlest breaking of stereotypes is that the word Indian is used here with pride instead of condescension.
