Nov 16 ONCE WERE WARRIORS (DVD)

I learned about this film because the maker of REEL INJUN, (a documentary about Hollywood's depiction of Native Americans in its early films) kept talking about it being the first movie that broke the portrayed stereotypes of Native Americans, in this one they act just as crazy and self destructive as any other people shown in movies.
This is not a bad movie, actually it is pretty good for 1994, however watching it now there is nothing new in it. The thing is it is not about Native Americans at all. It is about a Maori family in New Zealand and the troubles they go through. Yes I can see how it would change how Indigenous Peoples around the world view themselves as being represented in movies, especially at the time of its release. in this one they act just as crazy and self destructive as any other people shown in movies.
