As the good friend I watched the movie with said, Style should never take over the story. In BUNRAKU the style overshadows the story which is weak and not as original as the makers think. The director in the Q and A afterwards said he has never seen a movie like this before, guess he has never seen SIN CITY cause while watching the movie all I could think of was how BUNRAKU's style reminded me of SIN CITY a lot. I didn't like that movie much either.
Constant narration throughout a movie is annoying. The white guy always saving the day, even if he is weaker, is insulting. Like come on some cowboy who does nothing but punches is going to be a better fighter then a samurai, who takes on entire gangs singlehandly?
The whole thing about the samurai going to jail and the cowboy taking his money is nothing but pure prejudice and sickening.
Kevin McKidd steals the show as Cornation Street like, Yorkshire accented killer #2 (his words) and as always Ron Perlman makes even a small role like this shine with a master rated B movie glow that only he can deliver. GACKT brings his super stardom to North America and shows how a real samurai behaves. Even Josh Hartnett had a few good scenes, though would have been better if he did more then just punch. What the purpose of Woody Harreleson and Demi Moore I just don't know. Oh poor Demi, such a great actress reduced to such an empty role.
To think I waited in line for almost two hours, in the rain for that. Oh well at least I got to see GACKT in person and in a red and black kimono with dragons on it none the less. He never did answer the question about whether he was going to tour in Canada though.
