Every two weeks this summer The 519 is showing free movies in Cawthra park, in the Church Street gay village in Toronto.
MOMMIE DEAREST was the second movie that they shown this year and the one I went to. The other one I just saw the ending. People describe this movie as very campy and very funny, but what they seem to ignore or fail to realize is that it is a movie based on a young girls life and her dealing with her mother's mental illness. It was obvious to me that it was about mental illness, not about a mother who just happened to be weird. Sitting there on the grass in the park with about 200 other people who were laughing every time the mother did something strange or bizarre was disturbing because it felt like watching people laugh at a retarded child. Though the movie is done well and is based on the autobiographical book of the adopted daughter of Joan Crawford, I do not think that the subject matter was treated the right way.
