Sometimes knowing takes away the fun or in this case the terror. Yes its great to find out why Tommy acted the way he did and did those things,
but the movie does not go into enough detail.
It ties up loose ends so to speak by answering questions but in doing so it seems to want you to feel sorry for this man.
That takes away from the terror and makes him a misunderstood human instead of the monster you see in the previous movies.
As usual it tries to blame others and sometimes tries to confuse us about who the bad guy really is but when some of the characters are not acting the way they did in the other movies they don't quite succeed.
